Overview
The first thing you see when you open up SpeedGrade or FrameCycler is the SequenceBrowser desktop. You can show or hide this SequenceBrowser at any time by pressing <D>.
Use the tree view to navigate to the correct folder(s) on your drive or network. For easier viewing you can adjust the thumbnail size.
You can enter search criteria, such as file extensions in the top right field (e.g. “*.dpx”).
The SequenceBrowser Desktop is your main interface with files. It allows you to browse to footage, preview thumbnails and drag and drop material to your timeline.
Loading a Clip
There are multiple ways to load clips
Double Click
If you double click a thumbnail, the clip is appended after the selected clip in the timeline.
If no clip is selected, the clip is appended to the end of the timeline.
If no timeline is present, a new timeline is created and the clip inserted into it.
Plus Button
When you hover over a thumbnail, a plus button appears at the lower right. Click on the plus button to add the clip to the timeline. The functionality is identical to the double click.
Drag and Drop
Click on the thumbnail and hold the left mouse button down while dragging the clip to a specific position in the timeline.
If no timeline is present or if you drag outside an existing timeline, a horizontal red line will indicate that a new timeline will be created.
If you drag outside a track inside a timeline, a red horizontal line indicates that a new track will be created.
If you drag inside a track, a red vertical line whill indicate where the clip will be placed.
Drag and Drop (Replace Clip)
If you hold down ALT while dragging a sequence onto an existing clip, the existing clip will be replaced with the new sequence, but in and out points for this clip will stay the say.
Use this to replace existing footage with a new version of the same footage.
Note how the icon at the top left corner of the clip changes to indicate the replace function.
The SequenceBrowser Toolbar
At the top of the SequenceBrowser is a toolbar that gives you access to navigation and viewing options.
Navigation
The left part of the toolbar deals with navigation in the folder tree.
The 5 buttons are: Refresh folder tree, create folder, back in history, forward in history, navigate up.
Address Bar
The center part of the toolbar shows the current folder. You can also manually enter a location here and press Go to navigate there.
Sequence Options
To the right of the address bar is the Sequence Options dropdown box. This controls where the browser searches for sequences and how files from subfolders are combined to sequences.
The following options are possible:
- Sequences from selected folder: Only sequences from the currently selected folder are presented
- Sequences from selected folder + subtree: Sequences from the current folder plus all subfolders are collected. Each sequence is shown as an individual thumbnail.
- Each subfolder as one sequence: All files in a subfolder are combined into one sequence and shown as one thumbnail
- Each subtree as one sequence: All files in a subfolder and all folders contained in the subfolder are combined and shown as one thumbnail. Useful when you have a scene/take organization of your files, because it allows you to combine all files from one scene into one thumbnail.
The Sequence Options are heavily used in the Conform process of FrameCycler and SpeedGrade.
Filter
You can filter the browser for different file types. To do that, simply enter a wildcard such as *.dpx in the rightmost edit field of the SequenceBrowser Toolbar. To see all files again, simply enter * in the field.
